The Effective Executive – by Peter Drucker

‘The Definitive Guide to Getting the Right Things Done’

A new favourite of ours. It was written in 1967, so the world is very different today, but the principles in this book still hold strong. Simple ideas presented in this book can have a substantial impact on your effectiveness, like focusing on results and contribution, managing your time before managing your tasks, and focusing on opportunities rather than problems.

The 8 questions or practices of an Effective Executive:

  1. ask, ‘What needs to be done?’
  2. ask, ‘What is right for the enterprise?’
  3. develop action plans
  4. take responsibility for their decisions
  5. take responsibility for communicating
  6. focus on opportunities rather than problems
  7. run productive meetings
  8. think and say “we” rather than “I”

The 5 Habits of an Effective Executive:

  1. Know where your time goes
  2. Focus on outward contribution
  3. Build on strengths
  4. Concentrate on the few major areas where superior performance will produce outstanding results
  5. Make effective decisions

To Sell Is Human – by Dan Pink [WYWL podcast]

To Sell Is Human – by Dan Pink

‘The surprising truth about persuading, convincing and influencing others’

Dan Pink has done it again. We first reviewed ‘Drive’ back in 2016, and now we’re reviewing his book about sales and ‘non-sales selling’. Pink lays down the ABC of ‘how to be’ when selling: Atunement, Buoyancy, Clarity. Then, the three ‘what to do’ when selling: Pitch, Serve, Improvise. If you’re in the 1 out of 9 people that have ‘sales’ directly in their job description, you can use these to improve your technique. And even if you’re in the 8 out of 9 people that aren’t specifically in sales, you are still in ‘non-sales selling’ and can use these to influence and persuade people when selling your ideas.

We went to the BUF Girls office near Bondi Beach and spoke with Libby Babet. Following on from our previous episode about stoping smoking, we thought a few listeners (ourselves included) might have some New Years Resolutions around health and fitness, and Libby is just the person to offer some advice!

Libby received the life-changing diagnosis of malignant hypertension in her early 20s, but then used it as a platform and turned it into a life-long mission to inspire a new generation of happy, healthy, empowered, active people.

Libby believes she was put on this planet to help people be happier, feel good about themselves and live a full life by creating a positive life culture they live and breathe. Health and fitness turned out to be the most impactful way for her to do that, so Libby set out on a mission to create some unique businesses.

Hello entertrainment crew the BUF Girls, Bondi based athletic group training studio AGOGA, as well as healthy food businesses Chief Bar and This Natural Life.

Libby is also an author and journalist dedicated to writing on topics that inspire women and shift the way the way they think about their health. Her new book, Totally BUF, has just been released and in 2018 she’s taking 200 female entrepreneurs and business leaders to a 5-day business and wellness retreat in Fiji with her new venture Nurture Her!

Predictably Irrational – by Dan Ariely

‘The hidden forces that shape our decisions’

Economists start with the assumption that all humans are fully informed, rational decision makers. They use this to form all of their economic theories and models. But, as Dan Ariely points out, we’re NOT rational. In many cases, we’re very IRRATIONAL: we make decisions that aren’t in our own best interest. More than that, Dan recognised that we are irrational in very PREDICTABLE ways – we all make the same kinds of mistakes. He shows how we are influenced by things like comparisons, arousal, price, ownership and our own expectations. This is an absolutely phenomenal book with wide-ranging applications.

Joel Bakan – Author of ‘The Corporation’ [WYWL podcast]

Joel Bakan is the author of the books ‘The Corporation’ and ‘Childhood Under Siege’.

The Corporation (the last book we read and reviewed) talks about how the structure of large companies essentially forces them to focus purely on profit and disregard any other obligations or responsibilities they may have to those around them. It was also a documentation (of the same title) and Joel is currently working on ‘The Corporation 2’ to be released in late-2018.

Childhood Under Siege talks about how big businesses target children and control their actions through marketing and advertising, as children haven’t fully developed more rational, long-term thinking and planning yet.

The Corporation – by Joel Bakan [WYWL podcast]

The Corporation – by Joel Bakan

‘The Pathological Pursuit of Power and Profit’

This is another eye-opening book, where the author contends that the structure of companies forces them to be ‘psychopaths’ by definition: they have no regard for others, they externalise as many costs as they can, the take no responsibility, the feel no guilt or remorse, they lack empathy, the have asocial tendencies, they only relate to others superficially, and they manipulate everyone around them.
